Police identify victim of fatal Wichita motorcycle crash
Wichita police have identified the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash on the city's east side.
Lieutenant Steve Kenney said the cycle rider, identified as 34-year-old Derrick Bumphus, was going at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses. The crash was reported around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday on eastbound Kellogg, near the Kansas Turnpike exit.
As Bumphus was changing lanes, he struck an eastbound vehicle, then went down to the pavement. Kenney said the rider then became airborne and struck a sign, while the cycle skidded to the east along Kellogg.
"Witnesses describe the vehicle - the motorcycle - catching on fire at that point in time," said Captain Hassan Ramzah.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Kenney said this is the 15th traffic death of the year in Wichita, and the third involving a motorcycle.
