Uninsured adults, children and children 18 and younger with Medicaid, Children's Mercy or Unicare can receive a free flu shot from the Sedgwick County Health Department starting Monday.

The county is offering tips for preventing the virus before the winter months:

  • Wash hands
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow, not your hands
  • Get a flu shot
  • Stay home if you become ill

The county said flu shots are recommended for anyone older than 6 months, unless a physician directs otherwise. The country stresses getting a flu shot every year because the strain changes.

The vaccine is typically about 80 percent effective in preventing the virus. There are not antibiotics to cure the flu, although some medications can decrease the severity and length of symptoms.
