The Wichita City Council voted to deny a permit for a proposed nightclub and events center on the city's north side.

The club was proposed for a former grocery store building at 33rd Street North and Arkansas. The club was to be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and it would be rented as an events center for weddings and other activities.

People who live in the surrounding neighborhood signed protest petitions to block the club. They stated concerns about noise, crime and traffic in the area. Vice Mayor Janet Miller, who represents the area in the 6th district, said she has received a number of calls from residents who felt a club was not appropriate for the neighborhood.

Council member Pete Meitzner proposed sending the matter back to the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission, but his motion failed on a 3-4 vote. The council voted unanimously to deny the permit, but the applicants could bring the proposal back in one year.
