KDHE identifies chemical in Salina spill
State health officials have identified a substance that caused a strong odor and an evacuation in Salina.
Residents complained of a strong odor in the area of North Santa Fe and 7th Street in north Salina Tuesday night. Some homes and a day care center were evacuated for a time Wednesday morning, after some residents of the area complained of headaches.
A 55-gallon drum was found in a shed, and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment says it contained mercaptan, the substance used to give an odor to natural gas. KDHE officials said the spill poses a minimal health risk. Crews have been working to excavate and clean up the contaminated soil.
