DA report: Officer's shooting of Wichita woman appropriate for circumstances
The Sedgwick County District Attorney's office has found that a Wichita police officer acted appropriately under the circumstances when he shot and seriously injured a woman during a disturbance in the 500 block of North Summitlawn.
Shirley Smith, 53, had been fighting with a female neighbor and was reportedly going after the woman with a lockblade knife. The Wichita Eagle reports Smith spent five weeks recovering in the hospital.
Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stoltz said Smith swung the knife and actually cut the 34-year-old woman's clothing before she was shot.
A lengthy investigation by the DA found that the seven-year police veteran broke no laws by shooting Smith. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to conduct its own, independent investigation.
