Sedgwick County inmate held in Ottawa County Jail found dead
The KBI and Ottawa County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of an inmate being held there for Sedgwick County.
A news release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said the inmate was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on Sept. 5 on a 60-day commitment for charges stemming from two juvenile cases. Due to the population of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, the inmate was transferred to Ottawa, Kan., to be housed there.
The 19-year-old man was found dead, possibly from medical complications, in his cell late Saturday night. The man's name will not be released until relatives are notified. So far this year, 21,991 people have been booked.
Including this inmate, there have been five deaths in custody.
Two deaths were due to natural causes, and two deaths are probable suicides. The current one appears to have been caused by a seizure, and is currently under investigation by the KBI. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office offered its condolences to the family.
