Suspect in earlier shooting leads police on chase
A man suspected of being involved in a shooting earlier this week in east Wichita is in police custody after leading officers on a chase Friday night.
Wichita Police Capt. Hassan Ramzah told KFDI News at the scene that the chase began shortly before 10 p.m. when officers tried to stop the driver of a silver Chevy pickup truck near 34th Street North and Arkansas.
The suspect drove off and led officers on a chase through portions of north, west and east Wichita. Ramzah said the truck hit spike strips near the intersection of 13th and West Street which eventually led to the front passenger side tire coming off and exposing the rim.
A passenger fled from the truck near Edgemoor and Lincoln, according to Ramzah. He was taken into cusody. The suspect was eventually stopped nearby on Drury Lane, just north of Lincoln.
Ramzah said the man was taken to a hospital because it was believed that at some point during the chase he may have swallowed some drugs. Police searched the truck for evidence before it was towed from the scene.
Ramzah said the pursuit began because of the violent nature of the crime the suspect is believed to have been involved in. The 35-year-old man is suspected in a shooting that happened around 1:20 a.m. Thursday in the 800 block of South Drury Lane, just north of where the suspect was eventually stopped.
