Security measures approved for Old Town
Patrons at bars, hotels and restaurants in Wichita's Old Town neighborhood should start seeing new security measures take effect in the next few days.
The Wichita City Council approved an ordinance that beefs up security in the popular entertainment district after they heard multiple stories from business owners and members of the public about violence and crime in the area.
The ordinance was approved by a 5-0 count. Mayor Carl Brewer and Vice-mayor Janet Miller are out of the country.
Among the changes for the area:
- New lighting and security cameras are to be installed
- Sidewalk venders will have to shut down at 1 a.m.
- Police have new authorization to clear loiterers outside bars after closing time
- Club bouncers will be allowed to clear parking lots after closing time
- Food sales will be measured differently. Some clubs that allow 18-year-old patrons into their establishments will no longer be allowed to apply cover charges to their 30 percent food sales requirements
