A man has died after he walked in front of a freight train in north Wichita.

The incident occurred just after 11 o'clock this morning east of Santa Fe on 17th Street. The man was pronounced dead at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis at 12:12 p.m.

"An officer got here and called for EMS and Fire to assist him," said Police Sgt. Chris McAuliffe. "What he saw was a Black male in his 40s to 50s suffering from a severe injury by going out in front of the train."

"The conductor and engineer were blowing their (train) horns. Some of the residents around here told us the train was very loud because (the train crew) had seen this man on the track. They were trying to alert him. But the individual went out front and was struck by the train," said McAuliffe.

The man has not been identified.
