Severe weather rakes Mississippi
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says a severe storm front that barreled across the nation's midsection during the night has toppled trees, downed power lines and caused other wind damage in several northern counties.
Spokesman Jeff Rent told The Associated Press by phone early Thursday that at least 6 counties have reported damage but he had no immediate reports of any injuries or fatalities. He also said he had no immediate reports of tornadoes but authorities would be heading out to assess the damage at daybreak.
Damage reported included a tree down on a home and a mobile home damaged by gusting winds.
Meteorologist Brian Koeneke at the National Weather Service says severe weather was widespread but he didn't know yet if any tornadoes touched down.
