David D. Spenst, 45, is charged with one count of bank robbery. A criminal complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in Wichita alleges that on Oct. 15 Spenst robbed the Intrust Bank branch located inside the Dillons grocery store at 10222 W. 21st in Wichita.

 

An agent’s affidavit alleges Spenst walked into the bank at about 5:42 p.m. and asked to speak to someone about a loan. Spenst told an assistant manager that he was robbing the bank, and claimed he had a gun and a bomb. He asked if the manager wanted to see the gun. Spenst demanded money and cautioned the manager against sounding an alarm or he would “light the place up.” Spenst put the money in a black bag and left the bank on foot.

 

After police made public surveillance photographs of the robbery, they received information that led to Spenst’s arrest on Oct. 17. He was staying at a Drury Hotel in Wichita.

 

Spenst is set for a first appearance Monday in U.S. District Court in Wichita. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. The FBI investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson is prosecuting.
