Wichita man acquitted in child's traffic death
A Sedgwick County jury Friday returned not guilty verdicts in the second trial of Matthew Noel of Wichita, who was accused of killing a 5-year-old girl in a traffic accident while he was racing a friend on West Kellogg.
Police said Noel, 28, was speeding west on Kellogg on Feb. 12, 2011, along with his friend, Ronald Bevan, who was in another vehicle. The men's pickups collided, sending Noel's vehicle into the center concrete barrier and over a icy ramp that was formed by snow plows. Noel's truck collided almost head-on with a passenger car, killing 5-year-old Amber Randolph of Clearwater, who was in a booster seat in the back of the vehicle.
Noel's first trial ended in a mistrial in December of 2011. Co-defendant Bevan was convicted in January of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and aggravated battery. In April, Bevan was sentenced to 186 months in prison.
