Sedgwick County continues forum on fluoridation
Sedgwick County commissioners heard more comments on the fluoridation issue Wednesday, continuing a public hearing that began at an Oct. 17 meeting.
Commissioners heard from Dr. Paul Connett, who was unable to attend the earlier meeting. He formed the Fluoride Action Network. He told commissioners that it was a poor medical practice to add fluoride to drinking water, and Wichita should not rush to do this.
Connett said the major beneift of fluoride is topical, and it makes no sense to swallow it. He cited studies that claim fluoride has a negative impact on the IQ levels of children. Connett also said government has no right to force citizens to take medication.
The commission also heard from Dr. Albert Burgstahler, a retired professor at the University of Kansas, who stated that fluoride affects thyroid levels in the human body.
Commissioners heard from five speakers, who all opposed fluoridation. There were no speakers in favor of fluoridation who appeared at this meeting, although some pro-fluoride speakers took part in the Oct. 17 discussion. Connett has been criticized by medical and research groups and other fluoride supporters who have accused him of spreading misinformation. Wichita residents will vote on the fluoride issue in the Nov. 6 general election.
