Donations of blood and platelets short after Superstorm Sandy
The American Red Cross is asking for donations of blood and platelets in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
The storm forced hundreds of blood drives to be canceled across many mid-Atlantic states, which has resulted in a downfall of 9,000 blood and platelet donations.
As a result, the Wichita blood distribution center is extending its hours beginning today through Thursday, Nov. 8 for those who wish to donate blood and platelets to the relief effort. The donation center will be open until 5:30 p.m. Donations will end at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Red Cross said all types of blood are needed, but O positive, O negative, A negative and B negaitve types of blood are in the greatest need.
If you do not wish to donate blood and platelets but still want to help, the Red Cross is able to take donations via text message. Text 90999 to donate $10 to the Sandy relief efforts.
