Date announced for opening of new downtown YMCA

The Greater Wichita YMCA has announced that its new Robert D. Love Downtown YMCA will open for regular hours on Monday, Dec. 10. The public will get an early chance to see the building at Central and Market with an open house on Saturday, Dec. 8.

YMCA officials made the announcement at a Monday news conference. They have started a series of events leading up to the grand opening. An online scavenger hunt, called Y Marks the Spot, began Monday, where participants searchi for an online medallion to win a free one-year or a lifetime YMCA membership.    

YMCA communications director Shelly Conrady said a time capsule was removed from the current downtown building, and the contents will be revealed on Nov. 19.  A new time capsule will be placed in the cornerstone of the new building.

The YMCA corporate, child care and community development offices will begin moving into the new building starting Dec. 3. The downtown YMCA will close on Dec. 6 to begin its relocation. An open house will be held for the downtown community on Dec. 7, and the public open house will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the next day. 

The new Downtown YMCA opens with hours of 4:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays, and 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The new building will also include Cafe 402, operated by the Hyatt Regency Hotel, featuring healthy food and drink items and Starbucks coffee. It will be open from 6 a.m. to YMCA closing time Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
