Fire guts Clearwater home under renovation
A neighbor heard "popping " noises, looked out a window and saw his mother's house on fire.
Clearwater Fire Chief Marvin Schauf said the man called 911to 143 South 2nd Street at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday .
"When we got down here, fire was already venting out the roof," Clearwater Fire Chief Marvin Schauf said.
Damage was estimated at $70,000 to the home, which was under renovation.
Schauf said a plastic sheet laying over a floor furnace with its pilot light on caught falling wallpaper on fire.
Crews from Sedgwick County and Viola also responded to the scene.
