District Attorney's Office ruled officer involved shooting lawful and justified
The Sedgwick County District Attorney Office has cleared two Wichita Police Officers in the March 10th 2012 shooting death of Marquez Smart in Old Town.
Officers were clearing a large crowd in the 200 block of North Mosley at the time of the shooting. Smart died at the hospital, while several other people were treated and released for gunshot type wounds. “ The next phase involves an administrative investigation which will begin today, “said Chief Norman Williams. He stated that the practice of every police involved shooting is to conduct an administrative investigation. Members of the WPD Professional Standards Bureau will review the incident and the actions of all officers involved to make sure there were no violations of policy and regulations. “It is very important to the Wichita Police Department that our officers follow not only the law, but our own policies.” A spokesman said the department will comment on the case when the investigation is complete. The KBI also investigated the case.
