Sedgwick County to charge credit card fees on tax payments
Sedgwick County residents who use a credit card or debit card to pay their property tax bills will be charged a convenience fee starting later this month.
The county has been talking about the fee for the past couple of years as a way to recover the county's costs for card transactions involving Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards.
Commissioners were divided over the fee that should be charged on credit cards, with Karl Peterjohn and Richard Ranzau supporting a fee of 1.5 percent. Other commissioners felt that it should be 2 percent.
Commission chairman Tim Norton said the county can look at the costs and the fees later, and the rate can be adjusted up or down as necessary. Commissioner Jim Skelton said he wants an audit every three months to make sure the county isn't collecting any more than necessary to recover the costs.
The fee for debit card transactions will be a flat $3.95.
