Natural gas pressure release in northwest Wichita
Residents in the area of 29th St. N. and Tyler Road in northwest Wichita began calling 911 early Monday to report the smell of natural gas.
After a fire crew found gas escaping from an above-ground pumping station, Black Hills Energy was contacted. An official with the company told 911 some people in the area may need to be evacuated.
Acting Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Mike Wells said traffic was blocked at 29th and Tyler, south to Meadow Knoll.
"We did move some people away who were standing in front of some businesses in the 2500 block of North Tyler Road," said Wells. "But no homes were evacuated."
Black Hills Energy officials arrived and lowered the pressure at the pumping station. Shortly afterward, fire officials left the scene.
