Hostess closure to hit Emporia hard
The city of Emporia is preparing to deal with the loss of about 500 jobs when the Dolly Madison Bakery closes.
The bakery is part of the Hostess company, which announced it is going out of business because of a prolonged strike by members of the bakers' union.
The Dolly Madison Bakery is Emporia's second-largest employer. KWCH 12 is reporting that the town does not have enough open jobs to absorb the displaced workers.
This is the worst layoff in the town since 2008 when a Tyson plant let go 1,500 workers. City leaders are hoping a buyer will take over Hostess operations and hire back at least some of the bakery employees.
