Hundreds of people turned out for an annual Thanksgiving event in downtown Wichita. The 35th annual We Care Dinner provided a hot meal and winter clothing to needy families.

A long line was waiting outside the downtown YMCA at 3rd and Market when the event began at 11 a.m. Wednesday. A similar line of people waited for winter coats and clothing at the nearby First United Methodist Church.

The event was sponsored by the YMCA, Corner Bank and the accounting firm of Allen, Gibbs and Houlik. Cargill's Honeysuckle White donated turkeys, and Syl's Catering prepared the Thanksgiving meals. Close to 2,000 meals were served at the event.

This was the last time for the We Care Dinner at the current downtown YMCA facility. Next year, it will be held at the new Robert D. Love Downtown YMCA, which has been under construction just north of the current building.
