City councilman O'Donnell announces intent to resign
Wichita City Council member Michael O'Donnell has announced that he will submit his resignation as the fourth district council member during the Dec. 4 council meeting. His resignation will take effect Dec. 31.
O'Donnell was elected as the new state senator for District 25 in Wichita on Nov. 6. In a statement released through the city's public information office, he said while it would be possible to serve in both positions, he feels the district would be best served with a full-time council member and a full-time state senator.
O'Donnell said his resignation would trigger an election next year for the remaining two years of his term on the council.
At the Dec. 4 meeting, the city council will decide whether to appoint an interim member or leave the seat vacant until the April 2 election. An interim member would be chosen by the council from a group of qualified candidates who file valid petitions with the city clerk.
