Truck kills woman while she walked her dog with husband
A 52-year-old woman was killed while walking with her husband and dog when a pickup truck hit her Wednesday night.
The couple was on a dirt road in their neighborhood in the K-42 Estates near 167th St. W. and 55th St. S. around 9 p.m.
"The driver of the pickup saw the people in the roadway too late," said Sedgwick County Sheriff Sgt. Jeff Ohmart. "He swerved to attempt to avoid any collisions, but he did strike the female and the dog, and unfortunately she was killed instantly and pronounced dead on scene."
The 28-year-old driver was from Wichita. He was in the area to visit family. He was not hurt, and neither was the woman's husband. The dog was killed in the wreck.
Ohmart said speeding did not appear to cause the accident. He said state law makes the speed limit 55 mph in the area because it is a rural dirt road with no speed limit signs.
There was nothing at the scene to indicate alcohol use, Ohmart said. He also said the dirt road likely did not cause the accident, either, although the scene will be re-examined under daylight.
The couple did not wear any reflective clothing to help alert drivers.
"There is no clothing that was reflective that obviously would have hopefully helped in this situation," Ohmart said.
