Three people were standing outside a burning house in west Wichita. The fire was in the 500 block of Evergreen Lane. Firefighters were called at 1 a.m. Saturday.

"When we first pulled up, we had heavy fire showing from the rear of the house," said Acting Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Wells. "Initial calls told us there were people trapped in the house. But by the time we got there, everybody was out."

Wells said the fire and smoke damage to the structure and the contents of the home is estimated at $275,000.

"Crews put out as much as they could from the exterior. Then we had crews go through the front door and kind of mop up and hit hot spots, pull ceiling and get up in the attic. There was a lot of heat up there," said Wells.

A fire investigator was called to determine how the fire started. Wells thought the fire started somewhere at the rear of the home.

"These are very nice homes in a very well-kept neighborhood," said Wells. "The house is going to be a total loss. It's really sad."
