A woman in her 20s was shot in the jaw as two men tried to force their way into her home Wednesday night.

Two men knocked on the door of the home in the 400 block of S. Edwards around 8:20 p.m. The woman's boyfriend answered the door. The two men on the porch tried to coax him outside.

"He didn't do that readily. The two male suspects attempted to bull their way into the residence, with the male resident here trying to slam the door," said Wichita Police Sgt. Kurt Peckenschneider. "His girlfriend came up behind him and assisted him in trying to shove the door shut."

One of the men outside fired a gun twice.

"One of the rounds struck the female resident in the jaw, or facial area," Peckenschneider said. "It's expected to be a survivable injury."

The woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Her boyfriend was not hurt. Peckenschneider did not know where the second bullet ended up.

The two suspects, described as black men who were wearing dark-colored clothing, took off down an alley east of the house.

Peckenschneider said the boyfriend did not know the people at the door. Peckenschneider said police were looking through the grass around the home for casings and bullet fragments.
