YMCA shows off new downtown facility
Construction workers are finishing the final touches at the new downtown YMCA in Wichita.
The facility opens its doors to the public Monday, Dec. 10. The Y held a tour Thursday for business leaders and the media.
The building has about 110,000 square feet of recreational space - everything from two swimming pools, to basketball courts to weight and cardio training stations. The old Y had less than half that space, about 45,000 square feet. The building that is being replaced was built as a workout center in 1959.
"The business model of the Y has changed dramatically over the years, and that facility is not appropriate to serve families," said Steve Clark, Wichita Area YMCA President.
The new center also includes corporate offices and large conference rooms, plus space for other services, like daycare and nutrition programs.
