City council approves rezoning for new Sam's Club in northwest Wichita
The Wichita city council has voted to approve a rezoning and a community unit plan for a development project that will include a new Sam's Club store at 29th and Maize Road.
Residents of the nearby Fox Ridge housing addition have raised objections at recent planning commission and district advisory board meetings. They're concerned about traffic, noise, crime and other issues. Council member Jeff Longwell said more than 30 changes have been made in the project to reduce the negative impact on the surrounding neighborhood, and he praised the efforts of developers, planning staff and the planning commission to work out significant compromises.
Longwell said zoning cases like this have to be judged by a strict finding of fact, and the council has to follow guidelines that have been set out in a Kansas Supreme Court ruling.
The council vote was 6-1, with Lavonta Williams voting no.
