Wichita police have a 28-year-old man in custody for a fatal weekend shooting at a home northeast of the downtown area. George Vasquez, Jr., 23, was found inside the front door of a home at 827 N. Wabash.

Lieutenant Todd Ojile said Vasquez and two other men were inside the home around 9 p.m. Saturday when someone knocked on the door. Vasquez answered, and then two shots were fired - one of them striking Vasquez in the head.

Ojile said the suspect is a man who knew and possibly worked with Vasquez and the other men in the house, but a motive for the shooting is not known. Officers arrived and found two men arguing in front of the home. Both were questioned. One turned out to be the suspect. He was booked into jail on a first degree murder complaint.

With this homicide and a fatal stabbing in southeast Wichita early Sunday, Wichita has had 23 homicides reported in 2012.
