Chase begins in Butler County and ends in north Wichita
A 40-year-old Great Bend man and a 29-year-old Wellington woman are in custody after a chase that started in Butler County and ended in Sedgwick County.
Butler County Sheriff Captain Don Currier said a deputy tried to stop a black Dodge pickup for speeding in Towanda. He chased the truck on K-254 into Sedgwick County at speeds around 100 mph.
The deputy lost sight of the pickup near 77th St. N. and Woodlawn.
Sedgwick County Sheriff Sergeant Keith Allen said a Maize Police Officer began chasing the truck north of 69th St. N. and Broadway. In the 5900 block of N. Palm in Wichita, the driver and a female passenger bailed out of the truck, and it rolled over a gas meter, causing a gas leak. The truck also flattened an inflatable Santa. Law enforcement officers arrested the couple.
The family on Palm was evacuated because of the gas leak. A county fire squad shut off the gas main a little after 3 a.m.
The man and woman are wanted for various crimes. Both Allen and Currier said the pickup they were in was stolen out of Wichita.
