City council sets hearing for athletic complex project
The Wichita City Council has voted to set a public hearing for Jan. 15 on a project plan for a new development that will include an athletic facility for youth sports events, hotels and retail shops. The Good Sports Fieldhouse is planned for the intersection of K-96 and Greenwich.
The council will hear details of the project along with public comments at the January meeting, then vote on the project plan. The project is to be funded with STAR bonds, which are supported by increases in sales tax revenues within the district that was established at K-96 and Greenwich.
The project will also include improvements to complete the K-96 and Greenwich interchange. The Kansas commerce secretary will have to give his approval before STAR bonds can be used to finance the project.
City council member Pete Meitzner said there is a lot of excitement around this project, since the youth sports events at the Good Sports facility could bring in close to two million visitors a year to Wichita.
