A Wichita man says he jumped a couple of fences to get to his elderly neighbor's house when he saw smoke and flames coming from the back deck.

"There was a couple of times when they were fighting me - not wanting to get out, looking for their dogs - that I got a little frustrated," said Reagan Hunt. "We got all the humans out. I think we did good."

The fire in the small house in the 600 block of North Kessler was reported shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday. Three adults escaped unhurt. One dog died.

As Hunt was helping the residents out of the home, another neighbor, Andrew Abbey, used a garden hose on the flames until firefighters arrived.

The cause has not been determined, but investigators are focusing on the back deck area. Damage is estimated at $50,000 to the structure and $30,000 to the contents.
