Wichita police are warning residents about leaving their cars running and unattended to warm them up in cold temperatures. Winter usually brings an increase in car thefts in Wichita.

Police Lt. Doug Nolte said cars left running in a driveway are an easy target for thieves. He said people should stay in their cars or find a way to lock their cars.

Police are also warning drivers not to leave their cars running outside a convenience store, even if they're just planning to run inside and make a quick purchase. It only takes a few seconds for someone to get in the car and drive away.
