Smoking in bed caused house fire in northeast Wichita
Three people escaped a house fire on New Year's Day.
It happened at about 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Chautauqua.
"The living room, hallway and one bedroom were completely consumed, and then pretty heavy smoke damage in the rest of the house," said Wichita Fire Lt. Colby Roberson.
"The person who was smoking in bed was not in the bedroom when the fire began," Fire Investigations Cpt. Stu Bevis said. "The fire did $40,000 in damage."
The Red Cross was called to help the family, who will need a place to stay until repairs are made.
