Wichita man gets 24 years for girlfriend's death
Sedgwick County judge Clark Owens ordered Eric Avila to serve more than 24 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend.
Avila, 40, and Alina Burkman, 35, had fought in the parking lot of the Kmart at 47th Street South and Broadway shortly after the two was kicked out of a nearby hotel. Burkman died of multiple stab wounds to her chest and abdomen. The incident happened March 8.
In a plea agreement with prosecutors, Avila pleaded guilty last month to second degree murder. He is also convicted of kidnapping and burglary. Judge Owens ordered Avila to serve his sentenced consecutively, for a total of 221 months.
