Woman from Mexico pleads guilty in identity theft case
A woman from Mexico pleaded guilty to immigration document fraud in a Wichita federal court.
Benita Cardona-Gonzalez, 32, pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of possessing fraudulently obtained identification documents. Cardona-Gonzalez used a Social Security card and a Texas birth certificate to take the identity of Candida Gutierrez for more than a decade.
Gutierrez is an elementary school teacher in Houston. In October, she discussed how her identity was used to take out a mortgage loan and medical care for the birth of two children.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 25. A sentence of 18 months in federal prison has been recommended, with the agreement that Cardona-Gonzalez would be deported after completing the sentence.
