Mexican citizen faces federal drug and gun charges in Wichita
A Mexican citizen was already facing deportation before he was charged in federal court with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
A news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says Wichita police found more than 10 pounds of methamphetamine in the vehicle of Jose De Jesus Del-Rio Montoya, 27, when they made a traffic stop Dec. 15.
Montoya is also charged with one count of unlawful possession of firearms and one count of unlawful possession of ammunition. Foreign nationals are almost always prohibited from possessing firearms in the U.S.
If convicted, Montoya faces a penalty of not less than 10 years and not more than life and a fine up to $10 million on the drug charge, and a maximum penalty of up to 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 on each of the firearms counts.
