S.W.A.T. standoff ends peacefully in West Wichita
SWAT team officers were able to end a standoff peacefully in the 2400 block of West Newell, near Central and Meridian in Wichita.
It all began around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday when a man became enraged over getting the wrong order at a McDonald's drive-through at Kellogg and Dugan Road. Police believe the man, who had a woman in his vehicle, drove around the building and tried to cut back into the line.
A woman in a car yelled at the male driver. Police Sergeant Bill Stevens said the man threw a crowbar at the woman's car.
"When she pulled out from the drive-through, the male suspect got out and fired one time from a shotgun and struck the female victim's door," said Stevens. The woman was not injured.
Police found the SUV with the license tag "SAMPSON" parked at the man's home.
Hours passed as officers consulted with the district attorney's office to get a warrant to allow them into the home. Repeated attempts at reaching residents by phone and by knocking on the door resulted in silence.
Finally, at about 1:30 p.m. SWAT team officers pulled into the driveway with a large armored vehicle. A negotiator, using a loudspeaker, was able to talk someone into opening the door.
Two men and a woman were taken downtown for questioning. No one was hurt.
