Wichita police say the 80-year-old man who was struck and killed by a car Tuesday night in the 200 block of North Broadway was homeless, and he frequented the downtown area.

Thomas Wimberly was known to police officers, and he often visited the Lord's Diner to eat and slept in homeless shelters. He was struck by a 1993 Oldsmobile that was driven by a 20-year-old woman.

"It appears Mr. Wimberly was walking eastbound and crossed in the middle of the block in front of traffic," said Police Lt. Joe Schroeder.

Schroeder added that Wimberly may have suffered from poor hearing and eyesight.

Police do not suspect alcohol or drugs use for Wimberly or the driver.
