Burglar wounded in shootout with police in southwest Wichita
A 31-year-old man was in serious condition after surgery following a shootout with police officers in southwest Wichita late Sunday night.
Wichita Police Lieutenant Todd Ojile said a 64-year-old woman was awakened by noises around 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of West Dallas. She called relatives, who found a man hiding in a shed in the back yard. Police were called, and two officers chased the man around an unattached garage. Ojile said the man turned and fired a shot at an officer, and the officer returned fire, hitting the man three times. The officers were not hurt.
Ojile said the two officers were nearby, helping to impound a stolen car that police had been chasing earlier in the evening. SCAT officers spotted the car near Broadway and Kincaid. They tried to stop it at Mt. Vernon and Water, but it sped away. Officers lost the car, and it was later found in the 2500 block of West Dallas.
Ojile said the officers who were involved in the shootout had not been part of the earlier chase. He said the gunman had a criminal record, and he also had a federal warrant for his arrest on weapons violations.

A man was shot by police Sunday night in southwest Wichita.
Deputy Police Chief Terri Moses said the man exchanged gunfire with two officers near a shed in the 2500 block of west Dallas.
The call of a burglary in progress went out just after 11 p.m. An elderly woman called 911 to say someone was trying to break into a shed behind her house.
"Officers were on the scene very quickly. They went to the back of the home where the shed is located and saw an individual who was a suspect in this case," said Moses. "He ran around the back side of the property. Once he got to the west side of the property it appears he pulled a weapon. The suspect and the officers exchanged fire and the suspect was struck."
The wounded man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in critical condition. It's possible he was hit more than once.
Neither of the two officers were wounded.
Moses said more information will be released later this morning.
