Marshall Middle School will get a new storm shelter and music and technology lab space as part of a bond project.

Wichita Public Schools' Board of Education approved the $1.38 million proposal on Monday.

"This will be a nice expansion for them," said Kenton Cox of Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture.

The expansion includes a vocal rehearsal room and tech lab. The area doubles as the storm shelter. Student support services at the front of the building will be remodeled to include a secured entrance.

Board member Sheril Logan questioned the area around the auditorium, noting that people using the facility would potentially have access to the rest of the building. Cox said that concern would be looked into.

The proposal passed with a 6-1 vote. Logan voted 'no,' citing the need for more resolution on the auditorium area.

Construction will begin anytime in the coming weeks, with most completed by Jan. 2014.

The school board unanimously approved renovations for Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet, Lawrence Elementary and Mayberry Cultural Fine Arts Magnet.

Horace Mann was put on pause and study in 2011 because of funding and boundary change concerns. The school will get a new science lab and band room.

More contingency funds were approved for Lawrence and Mayberry.
