Names of Wichita men in Harvey County crash released
Three Wichita men remain hospitalized after weather crash in Harvey County.
It happened about 6:26 Wednesday morning in the northbound lanes of I-135 and the First Street Exit ramp in Newton. A Sheriff's Office investigator said 26 year-old Stephen Atterbery of Wichita, driving a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup slid into the guardrail in the median.
Atterbery got out to look at the damage to his vehicle. While inspecting the damage, the pickup was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 61 year-old Timothy Shelton of Wichita, causing the Dodge Ram 1500 to strike its driver.
Atterbery was taken by ambulance in critical condition to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. His current condition is not known. A passenger, 22 year-old Joel Miller of Albany, Georgia, was not hurt.
The passenger in the Silverado, 29 year-old Derek Bowers of Wichita, was taken to Newton Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Shelton is listed in fair condition at Wesley Medical Center.
The Harvey County Sheriff's Office, The Kansas Highway Patrol, The Newton Police Department and Newton Fire/EMS responded to the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
