Just before midnight Friday, a woman in a home in the 200 block of East Third Street spotted a glow outside her home.

Her husband went outside and saw flames around the chimney. He attempted to use their garden hose to put out the fire, but it was frozen. They called 911.

Valley Center crews arrived to smoke and flames outside the home around the chimney. They also found fire that had spread into the home's attic. Valley Center and Sedgwick County firefighters had the fire under control quickly, and made sure in had not spread further into the home.

Valley Center Captain Derek Pierce said everyone got out of the home safely. An official cause has not been determined. Damage is estimated around $45,000.
