Crews prepare to demolish Central YMCA
Beginning at 8:00 a.m. Monday, Feb.4 wrecking crews will begin tearing down the facility.
“This will be a momentous and bittersweet day for many of us,” said Greater Wichita YMCA Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Schoenebeck. “I’ll never forget setting up my office in a storage closet or having citywide operations meetings with everyone crammed around a little table because it was the only spot available. We made do, and the building served the community well for half a century.”
The former Central YMCA at 402 N. Market will be demolished to create additional parking for the new Robert D. Love Downtown YMCA that opened in December. The Central YMCA opened in 1959 and closed two months ago.
