3 now in custody for El Dorado shooting
Cowley County officials have arrested the suspected gunman in a shooting incident in El Dorado. The man was caught after a chase with a stolen car and a foot chase in Cowley County Monday afternoon. A call for help led officers to take two other people in for questioning.
In a statement, El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said Cowley County deputies responded to a service call from a woman who reported an accident near Winfield Lake. A deputy talked with the woman, then called El Dorado investigators to say he had one of the people being sought for questioning about the shooting.
Later that morning, a man identified as being present at the scene of the shooting reported a car accident near Atlanta. The description of the vehicle matched the one being searched for in connection with the case. That man was taken to El Dorado for questioning in the investigation.
Boren said an aerial search of the area resulted in the discovery of the suspect vehicle, a four-door silver Lexus, apparently abandoned after being driven into a ravine in a rural area near Atlanta.
Cowley County Sheriff Don Read said his deputies and other law enforcement officers chased a stolen car a short time later. The driver jumped out and tried to run in an area near Cambridge. Read said the man was taken into custody in a field, and he was turned over to Butler County for the El Dorado shooting.
A 23-year-old man remains in a Wichita hospital in critical condition. He was shot around 3 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of North Alleghany in El Dorado. Boren said no other suspects are being sought in the case.
