The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is asking for help from the public in finding a suspect.

Robert Helms, 45, is suspected of posing as a law enforcement officer on several occasions in the past month in a scheme to cash phony payroll checks and issuing bad checks to purchase merchandise.

Helms has most recently been seen in western Kansas, including Scott City and Russell. The KBI believes he likes to target Alco stores and other businesses in small towns.

Helms is 5-foot-7 and 190 pounds. He may be driving a maroon minivan, possibly a Dodge or Chrysler.

Anyone with information about Helms or his location is asked to call 1-800-KS-Crime or 911.
