The Wichita City Council has approved a new contract for the operation of a landfill that handles construction and demolition waste materials. The landfill has been operating at the site of the former Brooks Landfill in northwest Wichita since 2001.

The contract is with Greengroup, formerly known as Herzog Environmental. Herzog has been operating the landfill, so the staff will remain the same. The city has agreed to reduce its share of the revenues from the tipping fee in order to keep the fee at $32 per ton. Public Works Director Alan King said the reduction in revenue for the city will still be enough to cover the city's costs, including closure costs.

The contract will allow Greengroup to expand the landfill into a new cell at the site near K-96 and Hoover Road, in order to keep the landfill open another 30 years.
