With winter weather headed our way, Westar Energy would like to remind customers that ice can often cause power outages, and there are a few items you should keep on hand to make an outage easier.

Westar suggests having the following items in case of an outage:

• Flashlights and fresh batteries
• Battery or wind up alarm clock
• Bottled water (a gallon per person per day)
• Nonperishable foods that don’t require heating
• Non-electric can opener
• Blankets, bedding and sleeping bags
• First-aid kit and medications
• Tool kit, including a wrench to turn off gas or water lines
• Clean clothes
• Pet supplies

Westar also suggests that if you have purchased a generator, it is important to familiarize yourself with its use before you actually need it.
