The Kansas Highway Patrol says it received 2,400 calls to assist motorists during the recent snow storms.

Superintendent Col. Ernest Garcia said 304 car wrecks were reported - about 11 percent of the call volume. Of those, 257 were non-injury accidents.

Garcia said the KHP used social media to its advantage during the storm, spreading information about road conditions.

"We experienced a tremendous amount of success using social media to get the word out," he said. "Our agency alone, the daily number of citizens we were reaching during the peak of the storms was between 50,000 to 70,000 people."

Kansas Department of Transportation Director Mike King said the state used 600 snow plows and graters to clear highways. He said that work was critical to keeping the Kansas economy going.

Garcia said Kansans were cautious when traveling.

"It's the true spirit of Kansas that came about in the last 10 days, in which everybody - everybody - pitched in and helped," Garcia said. "Luckily, we were able to minimize the danger and the risk."
