Wichita man pleads guilty in ex-girlfriend's death
A Wichita man has avoided a first-degree murder trial by pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his ex-girlfriend.
35-year-old Yusef Samad stabbed Mechelle Reed to death in front of her young son in July of 2009. Reed filed several requests for protection from abuse from Samad before her death. Samad's case was postponed for years, in part because of his diagnosis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
