52-year-old Wichita man arrested for downtown bank robbery
Wichita police have a 52-year-old man in custody for last Friday's robbery of a Commerce Bank location downtown. A photo on Facebook helped in making the arrest.
The Commerce Bank at 456 South Main was robbed Friday morning, and later in the day police posted a surveillance photo from the bank on the WPD Facebook page.
Lieutenant Joe Schroeder said within an hour, someone called and reported recognizing the man. Schroeder said it was the fastest response he has seen to a Facebook post like this.
Detectives went to a home on South Hydraulic and talked to several other people who thought they knew who the bank robber was. Schroeder said officers called the man on the phone, and he refused to talk to them, but later in the day the man went to the Sedgwick County jail to turn himself in.
Schroeder said police and the FBI are checking to see if the man might be involved in other recent robberies, but there's no indication of that at this time.
